The Ostler, The Old Nurses Story and The Red Room Essay Example For Students

The Ostler, The Old Nurses Story and The Red Room Essay I have chosen the following three stories The Ostler written by Wilkie Collins, The Old Nurses Story written by Elizabeth Gaskell and The Red Room written by H. G. Wells. All these stories are taken from the 19th century collection of mystery stories. In this, I will be discussing how the author holds the audiences attention by using different types of techniques. I chose these three stories because they took my interest and I enjoyed them the most. They all share the same malicious mood. The Ostler begins when a girl comes across the Ostler having a nightmare. The girl goes off and tells another person, about her experience and is told that the Ostler normally suffers from these dreams. During the nightmare, a woman comes into his room and tries to kill him with a knife. When the Ostler goes home, he tells his mother of his experience. Seven years later, the Ostler meets a woman and they soon become engaged. The Ostlers mother keeps telling him to leave her as she is of the same description as in his dream. The mother later on sees the women with a knife and tries to tell the Ostler, but he doesnt believe her. In the end, the Ostlers dream almost becomes true, the women tries to kill him with a knife, but he manages to escape and the woman was never seen again. The Red Room begins when a man is determined to go to the Red Room that the old people had told him not to because of the deaths and how they feared it. The young man, despite the warnings, went into the room. He has to keep lighting the candles in the room because they keep going out constantly. In the end he manages to knock himself unconscious. We will write a custom essay on The Ostler, The Old Nurses Story and The Red Room specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now When he awakes the next day, he is told that it is his own fears that have knocked him out. The Old Nurses Story begins with a nurse telling a group of children how one of the characters she nursed (Miss Rosamond) was an only child and orphan as her parents had died at an early age and she had taken care of her. Miss Rosamond and the nurse later have to move away, to live with Lord Furnivals granddaughter. One night, when the nurse was almost asleep, she heard noises of someone playing the organ, and asked the next day who it was. She was told it as the ghost of Lord Furnival. It was also said that the ghost haunted the house. This scared the nurse. Through out the story, many strange things take place, one of these being the disappearance of Miss Rosamont. The nurse went out to find her, but gets brought home by a man, who also finds Miss Rosamont. Miss Rosamont had been taken away from the house by Lady Furnivals niece, who was a ghost and led her to another woman who was Lady Furnivals sister. They had tried to kill her because they were jealous that Miss Rosamont would take their place in the household, because Lord Funival had forced them out the house. At the beginning of The Ostler, there is the young girl narrating the story. The tension builds as the Ostler is having the nightmare, but it changes back as the book progresses and the story behind the nightmare is explained. When he meets the women he becomes engaged so there is very little tension, but it soon builds as the woman tries to kill him. His eyes opened towards the left hand side of the bed, and there stood The women of the dream, again? No! His wife; the living reality, with the dream spectres face in the dream spectres attitude; the fair arm up the knife clasped in the delicate, white hand. This is a good example of how the tension builds up. .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .postImageUrl , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:hover , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:visited , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:active { border:0!important; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:active , .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u89845813c868ace79cdfea117b123a3b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bernly Normal's Normality in Limbo EssayThis quote shows when the women tries to kill the Ostler. Wilkie Collins keeps the readers attention with the tension change and making the atmosphere feel uneasy. The Red Room starts off with the quote It will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me. There is a lot of irony in this because at the end of the play, he manages to scare himself, rather than it being the ghosts. The author uses words like dark and gloomy to describe the surrounding, settings and mysterious characters. The name of the story makes you think of danger referring to the colour red. H G Wells keeps the readers attention by starting it off with uneasy setting s. The tension is constantly high during this story because of the wording of the room, but during the end of the story, the tension begins to build even more when the young man enters the room, and has to keep re-lighting the candles. I turned to where the flames were still dancing between the glowing coals, and splashing red reflections upon the furniture. This is a good example of personification. They way the author describes the fire is very realistic. This made me want to read further. The Old Nurses Story begins with no tension and is very calm with the nurse telling the children the story. The tension slowly begins to increase towards the end when the main characters see the murder of the niece and sister ghosts. The settings are all described very spookily and it creates spooky moods during the story. Elizabeth Gaskell holds the audiences attention with the language she uses. All at once the east door gave way with a thundering crash, as if torn open in a violent passion, and there came into that broad and mysterious light, the figure of a tall old man, with grey hair and gleaming eyes. The use of words in this way, I found was very emotional, and it made me want to keep reading. It kept taking you deeper and deeper, until you had reached the end. All the characters in the play are described very differently. The author used all of the main characters to make the story more interesting. In The Ostler, Issac is described as a withered woebegone face. The eyebrows painfully contracted; the mouth fast set, and drawn down in the corners; the hollow cheeks sadly, and, as I cannot help fancying, prematurely grizzled hair. The character seems very bothered, sad and lonely. When he meets the women, he suddenly becomes happy and acts very loyal when his mother tells him to leave her. He wants to devote his life to her. In The Red Room the characters are all left nameless. This gives a feeling of there being no identity in the play and all very ghost-like. The young man is obviously very confident and does not show his fears of the room, even after all the warnings he still wants to enter. It will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me. This quote shows that he was a very brave man. The author describes the elderly characters as being very wise. The old women sat staring hard into the fire. This shows the old lady was sitting deep in thought and she sounds very knowledgeable. In The Old Nurses Story the nurse is very cautious protective and caring of Miss Rosamond. I held her tight with all my strength; with a set will I held her. She obviously feels she must look after Miss Rosamont. Miss Rosamont on the other hand, is very curious especially of the little girl ghost, yet at the same time scared. The Spectre of Lord Furnival is a powerful character, which at some point obviously dominated the household. He is described as a fierce, dour, old man. All three stories refer to spectres or ghosts, bringing in a very mysterious mood to the stories. .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .postImageUrl , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:hover , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:visited , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:active { border:0!important; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:active , .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5 .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub6a7c6802de31ed09f462a4e60cae4e5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Influences of Traits   EssayBut, all the plays have big differences in the way the tension is held and built up by the authors. All three stories keep the readers attention, mostly by the use of language, but all the techniques of language are very different. I enjoyed The Ostler the most because it was an easy story to understand. I also enjoyed the language the author used to describe the settings. I liked the way the tension was used to keep me reading the story, and how the end result of the nightmare became true, with the woman trying to kill the husband finishing it off.

Analyzing Ethical Behavior Paper Essays

Analyzing Ethical Behavior Paper Essays Analyzing Ethical Behavior Paper Essay Analyzing Ethical Behavior Paper Essay Ethics codes are retreated to help maintain a satisfactory level of ethical behavior within a business or organization and to help companies function more successfully (Mallow, Barnes, Bowers, Landwards, 2013, p. 101). Codes of ethics are broken numerous amounts of times in the business world. When these codes are broken, it can lead to multiple complications and scandals for corporations. Two examples of scandal and fraud in the business world are Bernard Lawrence Maddox and ENRON. Bernie Maddox Analysis Bernard Lawrence Maddox was the chairman for an investment securities firm that he founded in 1960. He was convicted of fraud in 2008 when he admitted that his business was, in fact, the largest Opinion scheme in history. Approximately $20 billion of, so-called, investments had dissipated (Kramer Ward, 2009, p. 27). In the case of Bernie Maddox, there were several investigations and red flags that appeared throughout each investigation. For instance, the fact that Maddox hardly ever encountered a down or slow month even in inconsistent markets raised quite a few suspicions. During the time of investigation, Bernie Maddox also confessed to operating a pyramid chem. as well as using a particular investment strategy called, split-strike conversion. This investment strategy entails buying and selling different sorts of options to reduce volatility (The Maddox affair:, 2008, Para. 7). Bernie Maddox is extremely smart and sneaky in a sense that he manipulated several people into investing in his Opinion scheme. Maddox took millions of dollars from huge corporations and companies. The fact that Madams company had never truly experienced a downfall should have been a major red flag to those who had invested in the company. Maddox portrayed his Opinion scheme in a way where people liked what they heard, liked what they saw, and therefore, invested immediately into the company without doing any further research. Maddox is a master manipulator, and his lack of ethics caused people to lose nearly their entire life savings. Although Bernie Maddox may have been the mastermind behind this scheme, he is not the only one to blame. There were multiple people working under Maddox. The code of ethics, or lack thereof, really shows here because if someone working in the company had any knowledge of what was going on in regards to the Opinion chem., he or she should have had the courage and honesty to go to someone of higher authority and report what Maddox was doing. If someone had any code of ethics or integrity, he or she should have thought about the lives that Madams Opinion scheme was affecting, and the illegal activity should have been reported immediately. Due to the lack of a code of ethics, multiple people lost a great amount of money by investing in Madams Opinion scheme. Bernie Maddox has an incredibly selfish view Of ethics and corporate responsibility towards his stakeholders. All that was on his mind at the time of the scheme was getting more money and being wealthy. He didnt care who he was affecting in a negative way, just as long as he benefited in the end; which is ironic since he ended up in prison with a 150-year sentence. ENRON Analysis ENRON Corporation was an energy and services company located in Texas. It went bankrupt in December of 2001 due to a planned accounting fraud. This accounting fraud led to several questions and concerns, not only about ENRON, but also about the accounting and financial companies working for ENRON. ENRON lied about its profits and stands accused of a range of shady dealings, including concealing debts so they didnt show up in the companys accounts (Enron Scandal at-a-glance, 2002, Para. 3). ENRON had close ties to the White House, therefore creating political implications as well. The lack of ethical standards for ENRON is obvious in this scandal. Executives and employees of the corporation were sneaky liars. They manipulated financial reports and accounts to make it appear as if the company was in good standing when it really wasnt. ENRON Corporation has a manipulative, unethical view on ethics and corporate responsibility. Because the corporation lied about numerous things regarding the finances and accounting, this implies that there was a huge lack of ethics within the company. The fact that executives and employees were okay with lying about so many records leads people to believe that the entire ENRON Corporation was set on a lie. ENRON, as well as accounting and financing companies, betrayed the trust Of several people because Of this scandal. Conclusion In sum, both the Bernie Maddox scandal and the ENRON scandal lacked a retain code of ethics and, as a result, both corporations no longer exist in the business world and executives and employees at each of these corporations faced life long consequences.

Nursing - Essay Example Hence, mentors would obtain respect from their juniors and a good status though their professional and ethical practices. Evidently, an effective teacher-student communication forms the foundation of education. The teacher should identify his student’s skills and weaknesses through an effective way of communication as this practice is necessary to enhance the overall process of learning. In the same way, the mentor has to design an effective communication approach for each junior colleague according to the colleague’s IQ level. Such a strategy would assist the mentor to pass information on to his juniors in a most effective way. The efficiency of communication between the mentor and the learner determines the duration that the learner would take to achieve better practicing knowledge and skills. In the absence of better mentor-learner communication, a junior nurse (learner) can never attain professional standards or other practicing

Using the Westlaw service and the Keysite feature to complee this project - Research Paper Example 08-55671, 08-55708)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This is a case where an African-American petitioner sought writ of habeaus corpus after being convicted of first degree murder, second degree robbery, and kidnapping for robbery. The conviction also includes affirmance of his sentence to life coupled with a year in prison without parole. Nonetheless, this case though not yet overruled has received some negative treatment from the following case: In this case, some white police officers who were being rehired as entry-level officers after their resignation, brought suit alleging that the city had violated Title VII and Equal Protection Clause when they were denied credit for their earlier years of services. The credit was granted to African-American officer who were also in the process of being rehired. Despite the court ruling that Fair Pay Act applied retroactively on officers’ claims, paycheck accrual rule applied to officers’ 1983 claims, and that res judicata barred offices’ pay discrimination claims, the case has received negative treatment without being overruled from: In this case, a former employee of Home Depot, Ames brought action against former employer with allegations that the termination received violated the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Amazingly, the United States District Court for the Illinois Northern District, granted summary judgment that was in favor of employer on all the counts brought forth by the employee. After employee’s appealed, the Courts of Appeal held that the employee’s alcohol abuse was not serious health condition to command for protection under the FMLA and ADA, the termination was not retaliation for requesting for FMLA leave as the plaintiff alleged, and that the employee did not have any disability. Lab 3 - Essay Example ulum and golgi apparatus are located closer to the plasma membrane due to their functions of self-destruction, releasing toxic substances to the outside environment and collecting waste products. The foundation in the structure of the plasma membrane is the phospholipid bilayer forming a barrier between two aqueous compartments on the two sides of the cell: inside and outside. There are specific functions for proteins embedded in the interior of the phospholipid bilayer. They carry out various functions such as selective transport of molecules and cell to cell identification. Thus, the main function of the plasma membrane is to control the active and passive movement of various substances into and out of the cell. Another major difference is that plant cells have chlorophyll which is a light-absorbing pigment required for photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is responsible for giving the plants a green color  and is found in chloroplasts.  Ã‚   However, golgi apparatus, lysosomes and peroxisomes are only found in eukaryotic cells due to  the fact that there are no membranous structures within the prokaryotic cells  except the plasma membrane.    Mitochondria are known as the â€Å"power plant of the cell† because they are responsible for synthesizing most of the energy supply for the cell. This energy is in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mitochondria are also responsible for producing cholesterol and heme and in the self-destruction mechanism of the cell. Mitochondria have circular DNA which replicates similar to bacteria by a reproductive process called fission, they can make their own proteins. Moreover, as the structure always relate to the function, the presence of double membrane, i.e. a smooth outermost membrane and an inner membrane which has many folds known as cristae. The cristae increase the surface area; thereby they enhance productivity of cellular respiration.   Plant cells are known to be rigid structures with a defined shape which is due to the

Analysis Of Mere Christianity By CS Lewis Religion Essay

Analysis Of Mere Christianity By CS Lewis Religion Essay The book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis was a very interesting. As I first started reading the book from the preface I found out that before C.S. Lewis published the book he read them or gave them to someone to read aloud over the radio it was said to have been published into three separate parts the first one being named Broadcast talks which was aired in the year 1942. The second one that was given on the air was Christian Behavior which aired one year after in 1943.The last part to the three part series was called Beyond Personality which aired in 1944. The first chapter in the book was mainly about the Universal Law of Nature and what certain cultures find wrong and what certain right and how some cultures differ in beliefs. One of the many examples used in this chapter was that about marriage and how certain cultures allow men to have more than one wife to that of those who only allow only one wife. Another thing the Lewis mentions in this chapter is that of how a culture wou ld be strange if it didnt follow its own laws. In book one chapter 3 he explains how the only way we know our laws is our reactions to it and how we understand it. In chapter 4 Lewis discusses how greediness and spirits are too conflicting habits to interpret life which have been talked about and conflicted over eternally in view of the fact that thoughts natives begin thinking how the world came upon to be. The authors explain greediness in the books typical common sense, the world as we know it have until the end of time be, and numerical main beliefs of possibility, as well as well-known as chance, bring on the subject of humanity. Lying on the additional put forward, and dovetail with the authors principle about the commandment of the natural world, the spiritual world maintain that a awareness bring the creation interested in survival by means of a understandable principle of create additional love comparable on the road to its own. Anywhere covetousness does not take for grant ed awareness on top of the life, everything spiritual does. Lewis uses a small number of additional analogy to construct his casing. The mass of human suppose in the life of one or more gods. Lewis admit to at on its own moment human being an nonbeliever, other than subsequent to accommodating the being of God, he exposed a outward appearance of open-mindedness which permitted each and every one religion to have a quantity of fact to themselves, to a certain extent than irritating to display with the intention of all religion are incorrect in their encouragement of belief. In chapter 2 Lewis discusses the pressure group to generalize Christianity interested in a faith that worships a high-quality as well as presently God. He argue not anything in the world is easy, as a result God cant survive undemanding also. A preside over possibly will appear to be a straightforward control the discussion, but at what time intimately look at turn elsewhere to exist complete of multifaceted stuff , complete of atom, good thing still bearing in mind the preside over involve reflect brightness finished of things. His peak is with the intention of God, even though high-quality bent great that curved awful. In chapter 5 the starting place of restlessness is, as said by Lewis is, to be bring into being in the whole story he claim to have well-known that the ruling of natural world exists, is that human beings have a hard time following the laws, and that Jesus himself is behind the laws of our world and the human ways are useless unless more things are applied to bring humans more intact with the laws. The things that must be accomplished are to understand and live with the laws and to see, and to see that God himself is very unyielding against it, and we are making it more difficult for us in the future if we think theres an easier way. This part explains the importance of the 3 most important religions in the modern age. These three concepts are Jewish, catholic and Islamic rel igions which express the concept of Pantheism which is short abbreviation meaning God is the Universe which is understood by Catholics, Jews, and Islamic people as God creating the universe and by atheist God was never real or existed. From Lewiss point of view the greatest problem and obstacle about Gods issue is that people believing if God actually existed or if he never did exist. More than half of the humans in the world believe one more than one demonic figure or Gods as said by Lewis. Lewis has also mentioned within the book that at one point of time he was Atheist but after thinking and thinking he came to the conclusion that all religions had some sort of truth to them thus allowing him to have an open mind about all religions including and especially Christianity. He later explains and moves on in this chapter saying that God may have taken sides to people in his decisions. Chapter three starts out talking and explaining the free will of man kind. This part of the story is thought to have given Jesus Christ the power and equal ness to God himself. The part that has come to shock me and many readers within the book is the idea that God came down to us in human being form as Jesus Christ to regain the love and happiness within the world. There was a point within the book where he (Lewis) argues that that all of the humans within his world has their own freedom Because God himself decided that is was mandatory in a way so that all of his followers meaning us would love him with eternal love and compassion. With all that said Lewis latter explains that evil would have developed over time which it has and would lead to the destruction of many of Gods creations. Now to Part 3, in chapter 1 of part 3 it explains the significance of morality, Lewis explains these 3 parts in many different and various ways. The first sort of morality has to do with human to human and the relationships we have together as humans. The second point of morality is within the huma n himself and how he or she sets them self out. The third and last part of the morality concept is that of the human himself and the creator being God in this case and the relationship they both share as one. Lewis s problem with this concept is he has set in his mind that the only part of the morality that the humans meaning us is we only pay attention to the first part and look at nothing more than just a human to human relationship. Chapter 6 which is a brief but interesting chapter which has to do with the Christian marriages within the church. One of the very first thing Lewis speaks about and relates to is that Catholic marriage is the putting together of two people at the same level of spirituality and love. He also explains that divorce is very bad for the community thus cause its the taking away of the two peoples love for one anther thus breaking and tearing apart their spiritual bon with each other. Chapter 9 is based on Lewis views on how the charity can benefit how God forgives us and how the term charity does not basically mean to give or donate to the needy and or poor. Another bright point Lewis makes with in this chapter is that being charitable simply does not mean having feelings for others such as love and compassion but is said to be more than just that and is looked at basically a concern for the well being of others he later gives the example of a mother spoiling and loving her daughter or son as a way of being charitable and making herself and him happy this is considered by Lewis to be the wrong way of being charitable. Lewis also includes in this passage saying that even though charity is not the showing of love for another it is the start in showing love and compassion for people and is much more looked upon than having hate against someone or something. Chapter 1 of book 4 explains the well stated differences between the making of and the begetting of one another. It starts off explaining the begetting by saying begetting is the sam e thing as being born the same with no differences at all, and the making is closely similar to creation of something or someone after the birth is done. The last chapter I am explaining and summarizing is book 4 chapter 3 because I believe it states a very important part of everyday life to all of us. In this chapter it is briefly explained that time is a part of our everyday life and is a concept of our world as we know it, but as said by Lewis Gods world does not revolve around time and does not exist within Heaven Which means that it is virtually meaningless to God but it is most certainly is important to us. This book was very well written even though I have only read half of this fantastic book iv actually started to find this book to be a very interesting and great story as I was writing my essay and going through the book the reason I find it to be interesting is because I love how it explains and takes you through the many places such as the universe as a whole and into God s dimension which is considered to be Heaven to me and how it takes us to the physical reality of life, this concludes my essay and I hope that this book is used next year because I found it to be very fascinating.

A Chemist :: essays research papers

A Chemist Becoming a chemist takes a lot of hard work and discipline. One very importan aspect of being a chemist is English, Comunication is of the utter most importance (Murphy). As well as having good communication skills, you also need a lot of patience. However, there are many other qualities you will need such as an excellent learning ability and mathematical skills. You will also need to be able to preceive concepts or objects. Once you get into college you need to know what kind of degree to get in order to have a fulfilling and successful career. For most entry level jobs a BS degree is sufficient. However, for a college teaching job a Ph.D. is required (Choices). After obtaining a degree, your next step would be to find a job. According to Jerry Murphy, if you want an easy way into the chemistry field you need to know someone already in that occupation. For the most part in Missouri, employment is increasing. Nevertheless, if you are not restricted to finding a job in Missouri, in the United States a whole employment is expected to increase 21% (Choices). After finding a job in the chemistry field that you will enjoy another quesiton arises, money. On hte average if you begin working at a entry level job witha bachelors degree your salary will be somewhere around $24,000 a year. If you start work with a masters degree you can expect about $32,000 and with a Ph.D. as mcuh as $60,000 ("Chemists") Research and development is the subcareer most chemist choose. In this subfield your primary goal would be to look for and use information about chemicals ("Chemists"). A chemists also spends a considerable amount of time in an office where he/she stores information or reports about research he/she has made. There are two different types of research basic research and applied research. In basic research a chemists studies the qualities and what makes up matter. In applied chemistry a chemist uses information obtained from basic research and puts it to practical use ("Chemists"). Chemistry includes many other subfields some of these are analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Analytical chemists ascertain the nature, structure, and composition of a substance.

Broadening Your Perspective Essay

The idea for this example is to further explain Activity Based Costing and how it can help the Ideal Manufacturing Company keep its costs at the correct level. Activity based costing is defined as â€Å"An activity based costing (ABC) system recognizes the relationship between costs, activities and products, and through this relationship assigns indirect costs to products less arbitrarily than traditional methods..† (Investopedia, 2014) A.) 17-2 broadening your perspective asks that we compute the activity-based overhead rate for each activity cost. To calculate the activity-based overhead rate for each activity cost we use the formula: The following chart are the results of that formula for each activity cost related to is driver. For market analysis we take the market analysis amount/hours of analysis. This is 1,050,000/15,000=$70.00. For the Product design we take the product design of 2,350,000 divided by the number of designs 2,500. This is calculation is 2,350,000/2,500=940. For the Product Development we calculate the Product Development/Number of Products. 3,600,000/90=40. Lastly the Prototype testing/Number of Tests or 1,400,000/500= 2,800. B) The next section that we are looking at is â€Å"How much cost would be charged to an in-house manufacturing department that consumed 1,800 hours of market analysis time, was provided 280 designs relating to 10 products, and request 92 engineering tests. The following chart is based on these calculations. The market analysis is calculated by taking the calculated rate of 70*1,800  hours. This calculation comes to a $126,000 cost. The product design is calculated by multiplying the previous calculations of 940*280. This calculation comes to $263,200 in costs. The Product Development is calculated by 10 products* recalculated 40,000. This calculation is equal to $400,000in costs. We then take the Prototype testing pre-calculated 2800*92 engineering tests. This calculation is equal to $257,600 in costs. The total costs after the sum is $1,046,800. C.) These calculations are taken based on the question asked of â€Å"How much cost would serve as the basis for pricing an R&D bid with an outside company on a contract that would consume 800 hours of analysis time, require 178 designs relating to 3 products, and result in 70 engineering tests?† The following chart is the above calculations: For this set of calculations we take the 800 hours of analysis time and multiply it by 70 which calculates to the $56,000 in costs. Product design is calculated by taking 178 designs multiplied by 940= $167,320 in costs. Product development is calculated by 3*40,000= 120,000 on costs and prototype testing is equal to 70*2800=196,000 in costs for a total of $539,320. D.) The benefit to Ideal Manufacturing of applying activity for both in house and outside charging purposes is that the use of activity based costing will show a more accurate selling proce of the product and the loss that is taken. Without activity based costing being used Ideal Manufacturing could be charged a higher selling price. This would not be ideal for Ideal Manufacturing as their competitors could get smaller selling prices. In all activity based costing helps the company to make sure that they are using the correct cost for each of their products and provides the company with a more accurate selling price. Marketing and Finance Extended Response

Analyse the importance of a marketing plan to achieve the main marketing objectives of a business. A marketing plan is vital to businesses in achieving the main marketing objectives. Such objectives include increase sales, increase market share and product development. It is a document that lists activities aimed at achieving particular marketing outcomes in relation to goods and services. The three important marketing processes in a marketing plan are situational analysis, develop marketing strategies and implementation, monitoring and controlling. It is evident that businesses such as Darrell Lea and Sony have demonstrated the importance of the three marketing processes. However this does not result in disregarding the remaining three because the marketing plan as a whole impacts on the business significantly. Situational analysis is one of the most crucial marketing processes in the marketing plan. It shows an understanding of the business's current position and determines an outcome of the future. It involves the identification and analysis of the internal strengths and weaknesses in the internal environment followed by the opportunities and threats from the external environment. If the business is failing to achieve their marketing goals, the opportunities must be taken to receive the better outcome. Such opportunities include new technology and expansion of the business. A major threat to the business is the competitive market because it impacts on the business’s activities. At the recent E3 2013 convention, Sony has announced their new gaming platform the PlayStation 4. It is apparent that Sony had spent $4. 951 billion dollars since the launch of the PlayStation 3. It is for the reason that Microsoft's XBOX 360 has being more successful in the past years and as a result Sony had to create a new marketing plan to become competitive in the market. It had strength in brand recognition and long history. However the weaknesses were found in competitiveness against Microsoft. As a result, Sony had to take the opportunity of the feedback from the community and setting the price of the new platform. The threats included Microsoft's new reveal of their console though have failed at the gaming convention because of their appalling market research. Therefore situational analysis is one of the important steps in a marketing plan because it determines where the business is standing in the market detailing the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Although the three marketing processes have being mentioned in depth, it must not be considered to disregard the remaining three. Market research is appropriate in collecting, recording and analysing information concerning a specific marketing problem. The market research would affect the next process because establishing market objectives can vary depending on the statistics shown in the previous process. This next process decides on which realistic and measurable goals should be undertaken in the marketing plan. To perform this, a business would need to identify target market/s so that their products are presented to potential customers. From this stage onwards, a business would need to develop strategies based on research, objectives and target market identified in order to succeed in the market. Therefore the remaining three concepts are also important because it would impact the business effectively influencing what actions needs to be undertaken. Developing marketing strategies is also another vital marketing process dealing with the marketing mix to achieve objectives. The marketing mix refers to the four P's; price, product, promotion and place. Product, one the elements focuses on the features, quality, packaging, design, brand name and guarantee. These key concepts must be carefully researched in order to satisfy consumer's needs and wants such as having a sense of security and having satisfaction. Price is determined by the competitive market. However other factors such as cost of production and level of consumer demand would impact the final cost of a product. Promotion focuses on informing, persuading and reminding customers about its products. Advertising is the main way that businesses would promote their product on the media. Changes in technology would impact the ways businesses promote their products such as social media advertising (SMA) because of the amount of consumers that visit certain websites. Place deals with the channels of distribution; that is, ways of getting the product to the customer. It involves a number of intermediaries that the customers know little about and are chosen on how widely the product will be distributed. Darrell Lea have demonstrated the importance of developing marketing strategies in their 18 month recovery. The two major concerns that have dragged the business were product range and distribution. As the business was losing $200,000 a week, new partner Tony Quinn decided to redesign the marketing plan. The product range was cut down from 800 to 200 along with a new uniform packaging that would be appealing to consumers. The distribution has being adjusted to 4,300 outlets in total including Woolworths and Coles because of the significant amount of customers visiting either stores on a weekly basis. By reformatting the marketing strategies in Darrell Lea, it is evident that this is another critical process in the marketing plan. The last fundamental process is implementation, monitoring and controlling the marketing plan. It involves placing the marketing strategies into operation and monitor the progression determining which actions should be made to achieve marketing objectives. Developing a financial forecast and comparing with actual and planned results is essential to the marketing plan because it determines on whether the marketing plan is successful or needs to be reassessed. Once the statistics of sales, market share and profitability have being received, the business can assess on which objectives are being met and which are not. Microsoft have being spent $2. 996 dollars since the debut of the XBOX 360. The company then had to reduce the amount of money spent which then came to a conclusion in redeveloping their marketing strategies. The company has decided in the recent years to decrease the price of the gaming platform to achieve marketing objectives such as increase sales and market shares. Another adjustment was advertisements placed on YouTube for consumers to watch. This promotion strategy attracted more consumers in buying their products. Therefore as aforementioned, the implementation, monitoring and controlling process can be revised which is crucial in creating successful marketing strategies.

The car is affordable and within the budget con straint hence creating an opportunity to individual the chance of ownership after considering a number of factors such as price, registration expenses ,taxes and the maintenance costs (www.cars.com)The choice of this car majorly depends on the market price, for instance in this case, the car is priced at 65,000 dollars when all the costs have been incorporated. The amount of tax payable by the buyer is also fair because if one was to buy this car then they will pay tax at the rate of 8 percent up to 60 months, this result into a reasonable monthly payment of 838.48 dollars. In this case, it is very important to consider the element of tax before one buys a particular car so as to enable the preparation of an appropriate budget which enables one conform to the right budget without straining financially (Paul and Champion, 2005). In addition, the costs such as fixing costs and registration will vary depending on the model of the vehicle that one wants to purchase. Therefore, factors o f price, tax, registration costs and fixing costs should be given a priority especially before an individual

Technology Strategy & Innovation Management Assignment

Technology Strategy & Innovation Management - Assignment Example There are several external factors that are affecting Motorola. I will use the PESTEL framework to analyze them. The focus, therefore, will be Political, Economic, Socio-cultural, Technological, Environment and Legal.. Let us now take a look at them in details. Political: In spite of technological advancements we have not yet reached a stage where we exist in the virtual dimension. Businesses are done through remote collaboration tools and solutions but those who collaborate operate from and within certain jurisdictions. Those jurisdictions have laws and they affect how any company operating within them can operate. Multinationals like Motorola must adapt to the political climates of their host nations. Socio-cultural: Motorola shows social responsibility and maintains good relationships with their host communities. An example of their social responsibility is the supplier diversity programme which endeavours to give certain disadvantaged groups an opportunity. Technological advancements: New solutions, new platforms and the pace of these innovations. From MRP we now have ERP and are quickly heading towards the Virtual Enterprise. Software breakthroughs have brought an expanded horizon. There are many business solutions and platforms that are constantly affecting the way we do business. Motorola is also taking advantage of these solutions and platforms. Environmental: Motorola has long term environmental policies that include designing all their products to be environment friendly, recycling or reusing all waste materials and conserving natural resources. Legal: Motorola has a well established legal department. This is demonstrated by the fact that they have an audit committee line which main aim is to allow access to the Audit and Legal Committee of the Motorola's Board of Directors. THE INTERNAL FACTORS THAT ARE AFFECTING MOTOROLA Now I want to discuss the internal factors that are affecting Motorola. I will concentrate on the threat of entry, threat of substitutes, the power of buyers, the power of suppliers and competitive rivalry. The threat of entry: Nokia, previously a minor in telecommunications overthrew Motorola the former undisputed king of telecommunications. Another smaller company could repeat what Nokia did. The challenge is predicting correctly the next technological trend. A new or smaller company can literarily become the world leader if it makes the right forecast and positions itself well to capitalize on it. There are other threats posed by certain platforms: As described by Hardwick and Bolton (1997), "Virtual enterprise companies share costs, skills, and core competencies that collectively enable them to access global markets with world-class solutions their members could not deliver individually." (Eom & Lee, 1999) This has afforded Motorola a better way of increasing efficiency while reducing costs. However, it has also opened up the door for less funded competition to increase their productivity. Threat of substitutes: The internet is growing and with this growth also comes a lot of opportunities and threats. The cost of doing business online is relatively low. This means that a less financed
